Here’s How (And How Not) To Wear Makeup On A Date
At some point we’ve all heard a guy tell us he likes us “better without makeup” – but that isn’t how we females feel when getting ready for a date. We stress about impressing our men, often changing things up a million times before walking out the door. And while makeup is one of the hardest things to get right, washing your face three times prior to finalizing a look can leave your skin rough and dry.
So here are a few looks that your man may love – and some that are best to avoid! Use this guide to take the pressure off of your next big night out:
What To Avoid
Bold Lips: While a striking lip color might be fun for a night out with girlfriends, do you really want your guy sporting that color, too? Kiss him and find out. Chances are, he won’t want to rock that hot pink on his own mouth. A little color goes a long way on a date, so save the reds, purples and bright pinks for another night.
Corpse Foundation: We’ve all made the mistakes of overcompensating for paleness with too much bronzer, caking on foundation to cover breakouts, or overdoing mascara in an attempt to play Kim K. for the night. But all of these acts can leave a lady looking like a corpse, which will do nothing but frighten a guy. He wants to look at you – not at a whole tube of concealer.
Thick Eyeliner: Eyeliner is one thing; a thick, one-inch layer of gunk around your lids is another. Overdone eyeliner will run and make it look like you were either sucker-punched by your date, or raised by raccoons.
And good luck if you get caught in the rain, or watch a sappy movie during which you shed a tear…
Drawn on Eyebrows: Thick eyebrows may be in, but that doesn’t mean thin brows look better colored in. Let them grow out, or go with what you’ve got. The whole “my 4-year-old niece went to town on my face with a crayon” look is never in vogue.
What To Try
Blush: Blush that highlights your cheekbones gives off an innocent, yet lovely date-night look. Your guy will love the subtle shape that it brings to your face.
Bronzer: A few strokes of golden bronzer around your cheeks makes for an irresistible sun-kissed look. Bronzer will help you appear to be awake and refreshed!
Smokey Eye: A smokey eye suggests a little bit of sexy mystery. Of course, knowing when a smokey eye is appropriate is key (hint: paired with an LBD = too hot for a movie date!).
Tinted lip balm: Let’s face it: your mouth is the focus of any date. After all, it’s the tool you use to communicate! Your mouth will be a focal point from the moment you say hello, so when your lips appear smooth and moisturized, your man will be more likely to want to kiss you.
Groomed, Polished Nails: This one is a no-brainer. Make sure that your nails are painted and well-maintained for any date. It’s a simple, direct way to show your partner that you take care of yourself.
Au Natural/Minimal Makeup: It’s hard for us ladies to grasp the concept of going au natural when we’re trying to bring a little sex appeal to date night, but doing so is easier than you think. Apply a little bit of foundation, work with small amounts of neutral colors – and voila! Best of all, a natural look demonstrates confidence – which we all know is the sexiest trait of all.
