Having Trouble Deciding What To Imbibe On A Date?
When it comes to date planning, most people don’t think of what they’ll be drinking in advance – but what you order will have an impact on how the rest of the night unfolds. That’s because not all beverages are created equal: different drinks provide different pros and cons for any dating imbiber. Here’s a quick guide to a few of the most common drink orders on a date, and which of those will give you the best or worst chances of succeeding in the love department.
The Best
Wine
Perhaps the quintessential date beverage, wine provides the perfect amount of romance, class, and, of course, alcohol, for an evening out with a prospective partner. Whether at a restaurant, bar, or live performance, wine sets the mood with elegance. It is probably not, however, the best choice at an ultra-casual spot such as a bowling alley…
Beer
In this modern age of fine craft beer, the world’s oldest beverage has made an undeniable comeback. With hundreds of style options possible – between lagers, pale ales, stouts, sours, and wheats – beer provides a range of flavors and experiences that wine simply can’t. Order a flight at a brewery or beer bar and take an adventure with your date!
Coffee
Meanwhile, unless you’ve agreed to meet at a frat house, pounding brewskies at 1PM won’t appeal to any love interest. But coffee dates have been around for as long as the beverage has. Java offers a nice energy buzz (or a power surge, if you’re overdoing it) and is the perfect drink for a midday get-together.
Cocktails
There’s nothing more sophisticated than a well-crafted cocktail (and the alcohol boost doesn’t hurt confidence levels, either). Ordering something classic – or an innovative concoction made with choice ingredients – will convey that you’re experienced and refined. Requesting a Sex on The Beach, however, might do the opposite.
Soft Drink
If you don’t partake in alcohol or have no clue what to order, ask for a soda. Ordering nothing at all will only make your date feel uncomfortable. If the calories or chemicals in Coke or Diet Pepsi concern you, go with a fruit juice. Or if all else fails, at the very least, order a seltzer, you stick-in-the-mud!
The Worst
Cheap Tequila
Fine tequila is great to sip or enjoy in mixed drinks, but the cheap stuff is bad news. It’ll only lead to hangovers, mistakes, and regrets – especially when in shot form. On second thought, cheap tequila is a terrible idea for any day of the year, date or not.
Any Shot
Yeah, you know what? Just stay away from any type of shot. No one needs that much liquid confidence in such a short amount of time, no matter how nervous a date may make that person. Take your shot with OJ or club soda and savor it slowly like a proper human.
Milk
What are you, six years old? While you’re at it, why not order that milk in a sippy cup? No woman (or man, for that matter) wants to date a milk-drinker. The same goes for YooHoo and Quik! Save the milk moustache for the next time you dine with mommy and daddy.
Redbull
Yes, a bit of caffeine will give you a nice little boost – but energy drinks will put you over the top in a terrible way. Unless you’re planning on skydiving, bullriding, or motocrossing on your date, steer clear of the Jersey Shore Juice.
Water
Yes, water will keep you hydrated and healthy, but you can chug all the H2O you want before the date (though, don’t go crazy – you don’t want to spend the whole evening in the bathroom). If you’re not in the mood for anything, at least ask for a soft drink or herbal tea with water on the side, so as not to look like an awkward weirdo incapable of decision making.
