What Are Some Conditions That Make A Person Undateable?
In my less wise years (less wise than my current years, at least), I would often find myself on dates with ladies facing issues I thought I could “fix” .The truth is, I probably should have actually allowed a psychiatrist and a Zoloft prescription to do the heavy lifting. There are some personal problems a romantic partner has no business attempting to solve, just as certain compatibility issues are absolute dating deal breakers.
Here are seven specific reasons you should definitely consider walking away from dating someone:
Severe Family Issues
I once dated a “daddy’s girl” whose mother seemed bizarrely jealous of her daughter. Needless to say, dinners were tense. If you end up with your boyfriend or girlfriend in the long run, always remember: you don’t just marry the guy or girl – you marry his or her (troubled) family.
Sexual Incompatibility
You know when it’s time to run? When the sex sucks. You can practice all you want, but if sex starts out and remains boring, awkward, or weird after the first few times, it’s probably going to stay that way. Passion and chemistry can’t be taught, and bad sex is often a result of a lack of both.
Substance Abuse
Recently I went on a date during which a girl told me she “blacks out” from drinking at least “twice a week”. The good news was that she “only drinks six times a week”. For a human to drink 85.7% of his or her waking hours is anything but healthy – and enabling that person to do so in a relationship is just as problematic.
Awful Friends
You’ll eventually have to spend a significant amount of time with any significant other’s friends. So while an awesome person might be the outlier in a group, if that person is tight with some awful besties, you’re in for a bumpy ride. Whether those gang members are petty and rude, or listen exclusively to EDM, you don’t want to be the one to come between them and your new partner.
Crazy Ex
If a girl nonchalantly refers to the ex-boyfriend who is stalking her, run. If she doesn’t mention the stalker until a month into the relationship, run faster. Until your partner is willing to deal with his or her crazy former companion head on, the safety of you and your partner will be at risk. No jilted lover has ever ended up best buds with the new object of his ex-girlfriend’s affection.
Drastically Conflicting Social / Political Views
Everything was great until you mentioned the word “evolution”. It’s one thing if your date believes in something you don’t – but you must consider how differing values will impact your relationship. If heated debates consistently give way to vicious arguments, you both need to agree to disagree and walk away for good.
Serial Cheating
When exclusivity has already been established, flirting with others for attention is one thing; flirting with others for a date is another. If your partner can’t keep his or her hands off of members of the opposite sex, there’s nothing you can do to tame that wild child. Perhaps everyone should be allowed a first strike – but strike two is a clear sign it’s time to cut ties… and strike three is on you, pal.
